The first month of 2021 passed by quite quickly, don’t you think? It’s almost February! You know what’s coming 🙂 Yup, Valentine’s Day.
To be honest, we don’t normally celebrate Valentine’s Day. Not because we believe in the whole notion of ‘we don’t need a special day in a year to show love to our partner’, but more because we’re generally can’t be arsed to go out—also because we don’t really care about giving or receiving gifts.

Last year I asked Jess what she wanted for Valentine’s Day. I was surprised when she said she didn’t want anything because she thought it wasn’t important. In my previous relationships with my exes, I dreaded the day because I felt like I had to prepare something: a surprise, a romantic dinner, or a gift; otherwise, my girlfriend would get mad at me. I was so relieved that Jess was so relaxed about it; it lifted the burden off of my shoulders.

When I was younger, yes, Valentine’s Day was a big deal. I would prepare myself for the day, buying gifts or cards, just because everyone else did the same. But as I got older, I realized it’s not the stuff. It’s the attention and love that matters.
We are, unfortunately, still in a long-distance relationship up until this day due to the border closure. Therefore, this year we decided to do it differently by spicing things up a little bit and do something special for each other. There are not that many things that we can do because of the distance situation. So we, might as well, are not doing the typical Valentine’s Day ritual—buying chocolate or romantic dinner.
Here’s what we are going to do instead: send each other a gift. Not just any gift, an eco-friendly one. Since we are showing our love for each other, why not show some love for Mother Earth at the same time?
